Fashion Design

The Fashion Design program at Houston City College prepares students for real work in the fashion industry. Through hands on training in design, construction, textiles, and patternmaking, students build both creative and technical skills while working with faculty who bring current industry experience into the classroom. From first concept to finished garment, the program emphasizes process, precision, and problem solving so students graduate with a strong portfolio, practical experience, and the confidence to step into a range of careers across the field.

Fashion Design, A.A.S.

Associate of Applied Science (AAS)
Education track: Workforce Training

Our Fashion Design AAS prepares students for a wide range of fashion-related careers, from Fashion Designer to Creative Director to Production Manager to Quality Controller. It offers a well-rounded degree plan covering the various aspects of garment production , from design to construction, textile selection, flat pattern, draping, and collection planning. This award falls under HCC’s institutional Art + Design accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). NASAD is recognized by the United States Department of Education as the agency responsible for the accreditation of all art and design curricula. Art + Design at HCC includes the following programs: Digital Communication, Digital Gaming & Simulation for Artists, Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising, Filmmaking, and Studio Art.

The Fashion Design program prepares students for careers in fashion related fields. Creative studies in design fundamentals, fashion analysis, fashion history, textiles, color, and sketching, along with technical training in draping, pattern making, pattern grading, and clothing construction provide the training required for entry-level employment by the mass production ready-to-wear industry or for custom design business operations. 

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) allows students to earn only one AAS in Fashion Design. Students may choose from one of the following two specializations: General or Theatrical Costume Design.

In addition, please note that a student may only earn one Occupational Skills Award (OSA) per academic year. TSI testing required prior to first enrollment for all AAS degrees and Level II certificates.

HCC is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Seven Art and Design Programs—Studio Art, Interior Design, Digital Communication, Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising, Filmmaking, and Digital Gaming & Simulation for Artists—collectively represent the Art and Design Unit at HCC.

STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Experiment with lines, colors, fabrics, patterns, textures, and styles in design and creation of original fashion design. Ability to produce projects to simulate a real life industry situations.

  • Apply critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills to a variety of fashion design problems.

  • Communicate design concepts at various stages of development using the design process, sewing skills, drawing skills and/or appropriate software.

  • Demonstrate punctuality and recognize the necessity of working long hours to meet deadlines by prioritizing tasks and effective use of time.

Theatrical Costume Design, C2

Certificate 1
Education track: Workforce Training

Our Theatrical Costume Design Certificate Level II prepares students for entry-level work in a costume workshop. The degree plan includes classes in fabric design, play analysis, historical costume construction, and advanced technical skills such as millinery, custom patterns, and bustier making.
